As fans of Baby Spa, we would like to share some groundbreaking research with you conducted last year that reveals children who swim also demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than others.

The four year study was conducted by the Griffith Institute for Educational Research and Swim Australia on 7000 children from the US, Australia and New Zealand aged five and under The children were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions. Alongside achieving physical milestones faster, the swimming children scored significantly better in visual-motor skills such as cutting paper, colouring-in and drawing lines and shapes. Most outstanding was the difference in story recall (17 months ahead) and understanding directions (20 months ahead).

Beyond water safety, early years swimming has children well ahead in many of the skills and processes they will apply once at school.

It is advisable to move onto swimming lessons once babies reach six months old. Grateful teachers thank us daily for giving their new little customers such a positive and gentle start with water, building their confidence that largely eliminates ensuing angst and tears.
